PREAMBLE

The Institute of International Peace Leaders (IIPL) is built upon the fundamental principles of integrity, respect, and commitment to peace. This Code of Conduct & Ethics establishes the standards of behavior expected of all IIPL Staff, Global Peace Ambassadors (GPAs), National Youth Leaders (NYLs), contractors, and volunteers. Adherence to this Code is mandatory and fundamental to maintaining the integrity and reputation of our global peacebuilding mission.

ARTICLE 1 - CORE ETHICAL PRINCIPLES

1.1 Integrity and Honesty

  • Act with unwavering personal and professional integrity
  • Maintain truthfulness in all communications and representations
  • Ensure transparency in actions and decision-making processes

1.2 Respect for Human Dignity

  • Treat all individuals with respect and dignity
  • Value diversity of perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences
  • Create inclusive environments free from discrimination

1.3 Impartiality and Independence

  • Maintain independence from inappropriate influences
  • Exercise objective judgment in all activities
  • Avoid actual or perceived conflicts of interest

1.4 Accountability and Responsibility

  • Take responsibility for personal actions and decisions
  • Use IIPL resources responsibly and efficiently
  • Report ethical concerns through proper channels

ARTICLE 2 - PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT

2.1 Workplace Behavior

  • Maintain professional demeanor in all IIPL activities
  • Respect organizational hierarchy and reporting lines
  • Collaborate constructively with colleagues and partners

2.2 Communication Standards

  • Use respectful and appropriate language
  • Maintain confidentiality where required
  • Ensure accuracy in all official communications

2.3 Time and Attendance

  • Fulfill commitments and meet deadlines
  • Use work time productively for IIPL purposes
  • Follow attendance and leave procedures

ARTICLE 3 - ANTI-DISCRIMINATION AND ANTI-HARASSMENT

3.1 Non-Discrimination Commitment

  • Zero tolerance for discrimination based on:
    • Race, ethnicity, or national origin
    • Religion or belief system
    • Gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation
    • Age, disability, or genetic information
    • Political opinion or any other protected status

3.2 Harassment Prohibition

  • No unwelcome conduct that creates hostile environment
  • Includes sexual harassment, bullying, and intimidation
  • Applies to physical, verbal, and digital interactions

3.3 Reporting and Protection

  • Safe, confidential reporting mechanisms available
  • Protection against retaliation for good-faith reports
  • Prompt and thorough investigation of all complaints

ARTICLE 4 - CONFLICT OF INTEREST

4.1 Definition and Disclosure

  • Disclose any situation where personal interests may conflict with IIPL duties
  • Includes financial interests, family relationships, external commitments
  • Annual disclosure statement required from all members and staff

4.2 Management of Conflicts

  • Recusal from decision-making where conflict exists
  • Divestment or management plans for significant conflicts
  • Review by Ethics Committee for complex situations

4.3 External Activities

  • Secondary employment must not conflict with IIPL duties
  • Prior approval required for significant external roles
  • Clear separation between personal and IIPL activities

ARTICLE 5 - CONFIDENTIALITY AND DATA PROTECTION

5.1 Confidential Information

  • Safeguard sensitive IIPL information
  • Includes donor data, member information, strategic plans
  • Maintain confidentiality after relationship with IIPL ends

5.2 Data Protection Compliance

  • Adhere to GDPR and data protection policies
  • Use personal data only for authorized purposes
  • Implement appropriate security measures

5.3 Intellectual Property

  • Respect copyrights, trademarks, and patents
  • Use IIPL intellectual property only as authorized
  • Protect IIPL's intellectual assets from misuse

ARTICLE 6 - USE OF IIPL RESOURCES

6.1 Property and Assets

  • Use IIPL property only for legitimate purposes
  • Maintain equipment and facilities properly
  • Report loss or damage immediately

6.2 Financial Resources

  • Ensure accurate financial reporting
  • Use funds only for authorized purposes
  • Maintain proper documentation for all expenditures

6.3 Information Systems

  • Use technology resources responsibly
  • Protect against unauthorized access
  • No inappropriate or illegal use of systems

ARTICLE 7 - EXTERNAL REPRESENTATION

7.1 Speaking on Behalf of IIPL

  • Only authorized individuals may represent official positions
  • Clear designation of personal vs. organizational views
  • Adherence to messaging guidelines in public statements

7.2 Media Interactions

  • Coordinate media contacts through Communications Department
  • Respect confidentiality agreements and embargoes
  • Professional conduct in all media appearances

7.3 Social Media Use

  • Clear disclosure of IIPL affiliation in professional contexts
  • Respectful engagement online
  • No endorsement of products or services implying IIPL support

ARTICLE 8 - COMPLIANCE WITH LAWS AND REGULATIONS

8.1 Legal Compliance

  • Adhere to all applicable local and international laws
  • Including anti-corruption, anti-terrorism, and sanctions laws
  • Seek guidance when legal requirements are unclear

8.2 Reporting Violations

  • Obligation to report suspected legal or ethical violations
  • Multiple reporting channels available
  • Protection for good-faith reporters

ARTICLE 9 - IMPLEMENTATION AND ENFORCEMENT

9.1 Training and Education

  • Mandatory Code training for all members and staff
  • Regular updates on ethical standards and policies
  • Resources available for ethical decision-making

9.2 Violations and Sanctions

  • Investigation of all reported violations
  • Progressive discipline based on violation severity
  • Possible sanctions up to and including termination/expulsion

9.3 Ethics Committee

  • Oversees Code implementation and interpretation
  • Advises on complex ethical situations
  • Reviews and updates Code annually

ARTICLE 10 - ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AND COMPLIANCE

10.1 All members and staff must:

  • Read and understand this Code
  • Complete annual certification of compliance
  • Participate in ethics training as required

10.2 Certification Statement:

"I have read and understood the IIPL Code of Conduct & Ethics. I agree to abide by its provisions and understand that violations may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment or membership."
